Industrial/Apartment Building Case Studies

Edogawa Garage Club| Jun'ichi Ito Architect & Associates
 Edogawa, Tokyo
I chose this one because of the power and simplicity in material, as well as the trans formative quality that it had in the renovation of the old warehouse. This is a theme that I will carry through these photos. As I must think about how we as architects deal with existing conditions.

My favorite of the industrial case studies. Why? They build their complex out of the end materials that they manufacture inside. Also, consistent with one bold material that is dynamic. Its refreshing to see such a big warehouse/complex have such close spaces as seen below. The facade studies are also pretty interesting. "The outside space is organised in accordance with the circulation of vehicles and the flows of raw materials and end products."

I enjoy, yet again, the bold move. Also, the ever changing facade as it reacts to the environment. A haptic and dynamic experience can also come from something as traditional as a cube. What does the material want to be...

Potential changing facade that can create a much different feeling when changed. Also a great use of simply using 2 contrasting materials. Dramatic moves. Though, not too thrilled with the lack of transparency with the conversion from exterior to interior, very different perspectives. Also like the idea of collaborating with local artists to help with the design process.

Turning Torso| Santiago Calatrava

A big fan of this building... the structural transparency of it and the simple concept conveyed, which are often the most dramatic and fun. The linear nature of it is an interesting constraint to deal with.

Dynamic Architecture| David Fisher
 Concept
This design has been circulating for awhile. Very intriguing idea that one building can have so many different appearances as a result of its shifting facade. The possibilities of having such a dynamic structure, literally moving as it reacts to its environment/user.

Some food for thought...
lest we forget that Architecture is much more than a luxury.
