Rebirth of Over-the-Rhine Documentary

I found the documentary to be interesting in the sense that it opened my eyes to the dark side of gentrification. Revitalization of OTR is great and is needed but how can it be done without moving the local residents out because they cant afford to live there anymore.

Enjoy! http://vimeo.com/17533828

Rhino tutorials!

All-
Just a reminder that there are some great resources for learning rhino on the right side of this page. I just found this site Digital Toolbox today, and it's got some really helpful beginners tutorials for anyone still struggling.

Design and the Elastic Mind

This is a fascinating MoMA exhibition on low tech 3D printing. Unfortunately the exhibition was in 2008...

ASSIGNMENT 01: Contextual 'Mappings'

BRIEF:
Choose a SCALE and a FILTER and generate a mixed-mode contextual map that quantitatively describes one of the following conditions. Be creative and  narrow in your focus (think beyond these suggestions), be innovative in your representations. Try something new! Consider how these mappings might formally, programmatically, or climatically implicate your project moving forward. This is pre-design, pre-thesis, and will be shared knowledge between both studios. Think: collages, timelines, interesting data representation, maps using our CAD file, etc., and consider the MAPPING resources on the sidebar of the blog.

CHOOSE A SCALE:
Region
(Great Lakes Megaregion)
The City
(The city of Cincinnati)
The Site
(Our 1-kilometer site radius)

THEN CHOOSE A FILTER:
Geologic:
Sedimentary
(soil types, geographic features, events in geologic time)
Hydrology
(water quality, natural infrastructures, filtration zones, water-table)

Climatic:
Solar
(Solar gain, Solar power (PV) implementation)
Wind
(wind-rose, wind power implementation in the city)
Precipitation
(storm-water run-off, avg. rainfall, flood plains)
Thermal
(geothermal opportunities, heat index, avg. annual temperature)

Anthropogenic:
Demographics
(Age, Ethnicity, change over time, density)
Historical
(Prevailing industries, architectural styles, political movements, timelines)
Cultural
(Recreation, Pastimes, trends, art & cultural production, underground scene, Zagat rated)
Socio-Political
(Non-profits, community farms, clubs or associations, political views
Economic
(top businesses, wealthiest companies, hottest startups, employment, top imports/exports)
Industrial
(sites of production/waste, landfills, evolution of industry, material flows)
Infrastructure
(public transportation, services, future city planning, food access, vacant lots)

FORMAT:
We will review this work as a group in printed pin-up format, 11x17 color prints please.
